The Annual Hawaii Kai Dog Walk - a New Tradition in East Honolulu

The annual Hawaii Kai Dog Walk was inaugurated in August, 2005, to raise community awareness about the need for more dog parks on Oahu, to provide an opportunity for dogs and their people to exericse and socialize in a fun and friendly atmosphere, and to raise funds to support Hui Ilio's mission..

Over 200 people attended the first annual Hawaii Kai Dog Walk, and subsequent years have seen almost 400 participants and their dogs.  Over 50 volunteers help to stage the event each year, and more than 50 business sponsors have provided door prizes and free gifts for the participants. The dog walk also helped Hui Ilio to raise funds for construction of the Hawaii Kai Dog Park.

The 2.3-mile course starts and ends at the Hawai'i Kai Park and Ride - site of the future Hawaii Kai Dog Park. The Route extends along Keahole to Hawaii Kai Drive and then to Kalanianole Highway and back to the Park and Ride.  See map below.  A mini-route is offered for smaller and older dogs.

The 2008 dog walk, held on June 22, was a celebration of the Hawaii Kai Dog Park's completion. One week later on June 29, the park was officially opened to the public
